Joy Ritenour grew up in rural Northern Virginia, on a beautiful farm surrounded by some usual and some very unusual subjects for her photography. She left Virginia after graduating high school to attend college in North Carolina. Winston Salem has been her home since 1982. Joy has expanded her interests from using photography as a hobby into a creative outlet and carries her cameras with her most always.
"My photography runs the gambit from tree limbs to cityscapes, and crushed cans to discarded fruit, or just the things I observe in everyday life that are visually different.
I have taken pictures since I was 10 years old. I was then, and still now, looking for the unusual whether a tree knot face, a cloud animal, or just something that looked weird. My first photos were with a Kodak Instamatic and then with cameras I collected over the years. Now I use mostly Polaroid’s and digital Nikons."
